Dear Cyclist, With so much happening for the Summerside Cycling Club, I wanted to start a Newsletter to highlight the activities and to bring people up to speed. This Newsletter has been something I wanted to do since the inception of the Club; however, I never really had the time. Not that time is all that plentiful today -- but as the Club has our chains in so many different sprockets right now (parden the puns), I thought it important to find the time to illustrate the club's activities to club veterans, newbies, and those who are simply interested in our happenings. Most importantly however is that I want to give everyone an opportunity to shape our Club. Inside the inaugural issue of our Newsletter you will find information about free training, new rides, award nominations, and an opportunity to further development any / all of our programming. Please let me know your thoughts. Ken Trenholm Become a Youth Cycling Leader or
Assistant There is no better way to shape our future but to create it! Being involved in the internationally acclaimed Sprockids youth cycling program holds a special place in my heart. I am passionate about this program. Why? It not only teaches kids how to ride a bike safely but also teaches them reasonability, courage, and independence -- it builds their self-esteem as they experience one success after another upon their completion of tasks.
This program offers youth aged 9 to 12 an opportunity to experience success by learning over 20 essential bicycle skills (riding, safety, and bike maintenance) with a team of adult leaders and assistants. For me, it is the small adult-to-youth ratio that translates into results for the kids (and us adults too!). Last year we had six and sometimes seven adults working with the 16 kids in our two groups. It takes many volunteers to run the program and ensure the children are safe. The SCC is in need of more volunteers in order to meet the needs for this program for the upcoming season. Do I need superior bike skills to be a
Leader or Assistant? April 12: 3-Hour

Nominations The Summerside Cycling Club is asking for nominations for our annual awards for 2007. As the 2008 season is about to start (when the snow goes bye-bye), it is no better time to reflect on last year. Nominations will be open for one week (April 3 to 10th) followed by one week for voting. The Awards up for Grabs are the following: 1. Yellow Jersey - Rider who overcame adversity
during the year As you can see, we have two new Awards for 2007: the Endurance Event of the Year and the Training Course of the Year. Place your nomination today. Bike Fit Open House & Registration
Day Have you often wondered if your bicycle fits you correctly? Do you know the five steps of proper bike fit? Did you know that the majority of back and knee problems reported by cyclists is because of improper bike fit? Com'on people, I'm not making this stuff up. At this FREE Clinic, you or your child will be walked through the Bike Fit process step-by-step. And, if you bring your helmet, we'll throw in a helmet check for free as well. But, there is a catch. As May 3rd is also Registration Day for the SCC, you'll be asked if you wish to have a membership to the Club. Club Fees are as follows: $20 - Upgrade Membership (if you already are a CPEI Member) All of these fees include a Cycling PEI membership as well. The hope is that the majority of Membership Fees and Waiver Forms will be completed on or before this date. If you are unable to register in person, please try to register through the mail or online. As Insurance is a big issue for clubs and organizations, you will need to have your Membership paid and the Waiver signed before you will be allowed to participate in any SCC events this year. Two more volunteers are still required for our Open House. I will train those volunteers on how to achieve a good bike fit.
Training
Unplugged . . . I've been thinking for some time that in order
for our Training Program to provide members with the most benefit to
our health, fitness, and motivation, we need to go a step above
merely offering the structured riding opportunities. I am putting a call out to members or potential
members if people would like to sit down and develop a generic training
program on paper. I would see this program encompassing the basic
tenets of strength and speed training, cardio, nutrition,
flexibility, and core development. While we would continue with our Training Rides
as a group, we would do most of the strength and core development
independently with a few group sessions so we could share our trade
secrets. I'd also hope to run our program through a National level
cycling coach for comments as well. I don't mind spearheading the program planning but I would like to have
a couple people interested and skilled to assist with its
development. However, I certainly do not want to get down and hammer
out our training program if people do not view this as a need /
interest. I will be attending Cycling Level II Road Coaching training in
Sackville (NB) on May 17 - 19 after obtaining my Level I Road training
earlier this year (perhaps all this talk about training and coaching has
inspired myself to put some of this info to practice). So, please drop me a line on your feelings toward this
process.
Monday Night
Beginner Group Rides Some people tell us that they would love to
come out and bicycle but they have a fear of the traffic, or it is just
hard to motivate themselves. If you fit into these, or other
categories, or know someone who does, you are the majority. Recent
studies site the number one reason why people -- who want to bicycle --
decide not to, is out of fear of being hurt while cycling. The benefit to participating in this new Monday
Night Series is that many of the riders will be new to group riding, some
may not have been on the bicycle for some time. It is not about
speed: The pace will be moderate; it is not about seeing if you can drop
the group on the first climb; it is about brining people together to share
a physical activity you can do your entire lifetime. And, for those that need that little motivation
to hit the saddle, group riding provides that. You'll come to count
down the days until the next ride and wonder if your new friends will come
out as well. Thanks to the initiative of Dave Clark of
Summerside who introduced the idea and to both Dave and Kirk Steele (also
of Summerside) who will be volunteering their time to be the Ride Captains
of the Monday Night Beginner Group Rides. During these rides, Dave and Kirk will answer
your questions and will help you understand just how much fun cycling
is. Although these rides are geared for the beginners, the rides are
open to anyone who wishes to join in who share the same philosophy as
above: maintaining a moderate pace and everyone rides together. If
enough people show up to warrant two different groups, that is a
possibility also.
SCC Training
Rides expand to Crapaud & Rocky Point The most popular training rides for our Club
are the Time Trials. Unlike official TT races
where the starting sequence is based on the finishing times
in preceding races (as in stage races), our TT starting positions have
more to do with what people are comfortable with than anything else.
Some riders like to get out first, others in the middle, others do not
like to be passed so they start last. Even some riders show up
late and then ride the course and meet up with the gang at the end or
send their time to the Ride Captain. With the addition of a Crapaud 19 km
TT and a Rocky Point 18.3 km TT, that brings the
total number of training TTs to four for the Club. These two new TTs
join the Miscouche 12.4 TT (entering its fourth year in the circuit) and
the Indian River 12.1 TT (entering its third year) Riders regularly set-out to set a faster time
than they rode previously, with over 60 per cent of the riders improving
their times historically. Riders earn points for time improvement
and overall ranking. Flexible, Fun, and we are always encouraging
each other to set a new personal best. Our most popular rides for a reason -- check
out these two new courses for a good ole fashioned dose of peer
encouragement and enthusiasm.
BFBC
News Entering its fourth year, the 278 km tip to tip
bicycle fund-raiser for Island breakfast programs will be making a major
announcement in the weeks to come about a new national partnership that
will help the event move closer to achieving its goal: to have a breakfast
program in all Island schools by the year 2020. Take on
the Challenge! Youth Eco-Bicycle
Olympics SPONSORS New SEA-PEI Bicycle
Tour
Does the idea of learning about buried treasure, ghosts who walk the Island, phantom trains, and phantom ships while covering all of PEI's scenic coastal drives by bicycle sound like the perfect Island-get-away? Of course it does. Join dozens of cyclists who experience the lore of Canada's smallest province with the strangest legends. One truly unique Island bicycle adventure! The purpose of the SEA PEI Bicycle Tour is to provide an organized activity whereby cyclists can bicycle all of PEI scenic routes in 5 days under an experienced "Legend Leader" who will tell the stories of the Island so that Island tales will be preserved and shared. There will be two or three pace groups during the day and each pace group will consist of a Legend Leader. Instead of doing it 5 days in a row, each ride is scheduled on a Saturday and the last ride is a Saturday / Sunday camping combo. The three pace group speeds are: 20 - 24 kph, 25 - 29 kph, or 30 + kph. If two pace groups, 20-26 kph and 27 + kph are the speeds. Here are the dates (9 a.m. start times): May 24 June 21 July 8 July 19 July 20 All of the above rides will also contain a 100 km loop for riders looking to bicycle 100 K during the day. The 100 K loop will not have a Legend Leader. Please note the new date for the West Point SEA PEI Tour ride as the previous date was a conflict with one of our Friends of SCC events, the Red Island Relay.
