Dear Cyclist,

Well, the Spring is upon us and so is the warm weather (okay, one out of two ain't bad).  But Spring is no doubt about the birth of the bicycling season.

Sometimes I can't help but feel bicyclists -- all bicyclists -- are united.  I mean, just as in the famous poem about two roads diverging in a wood and the person takes the path less travelled.  And, that choice has made all the difference.  We speak a language where hubs are human powered, where cranks vary in length, and nipples are not dirty-minded (although, indeed, they may be dirty).  We are connected to each other by the mere virtue that we ride a bicycle. And, it is this lifestyle decision that really makes all the difference!

Inside this Issue:

-  you'll learn about a role you, your friends, and co-workers can have to assist school children be provided with a free and universal  breakfast;

- you'll find information about our year-long training regime and 2007 award voting;

- you'll read about who is setting personal bests in the Spring and much more.

Pedaling Solidarity,

Ken Trenholm

Dairy Farmers of Canada supports BFBC
DFC signs three year contract to become Presenting Sponsor of Major Bicycling on P.E.I.

The award-winning Biking for Breakfast Challenge (BFBC) obtained Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) support yesterday when DFC agreed to encourage the organization with moral and financial support behind the event that has grown 75 per cent per year in rider participation and fund-raising efforts since the event's inception -- four years ago.

DFC will be the Presenting Sponsor for BFBC for the next three years.

"Supporting the BFBC simply feels like a natural thing to do for

Dairy Farmers of Canada," says Nathalie Roy, Registered Dietitian and representative for DFC in Atlantic Canada.

"Not only does this activity encourage a healthy meal like breakfast,
but it also encourages active, healthy living like bicycling".

This partnership is a big piece of the breakfast puzzle for the BFBC says Chairperson and Founder, Ken Trenholm of Summerside.

"DFC was the only organization we approached to be our Presenting
Sponsor", Trenholm recalls with a smile.

“We searched for an organization that we believe in, as
much as they believe in us, and are fortunate to have found an organization that is such a fit with the event's message”.

Roy also comments on the fit between this tip-to-tip bicycle charity
fund-raiser for school breakfast programs and the principles of
Dairy Farmers of Canada.

"It is a natural fit for DFC to support a health-minded program such as
the Biking for Breakfast Challenge.  DFC believes in supporting events
that have a positive impact on the health and wellness of Canadians - as BFBC does".

Roy expands on DFC’s commitment to this event and to healthy living: "It is our hope that our partnership with Biking for Breakfast Challenge
will help create awareness of the number of children that go to school
on an empty stomach, and to make it so that all children get a healthy,
balanced breakfast to start their day off right".

The most appealing aspects of BFBC for DFC are summarized by Nathalie Roy:

(1) What we find most appealing about the Biking for Breakfast
Challenge is that it brings people together for a good cause: that of
making sure that every child on Prince Edward Island starts his or her
school day after having had a good balanced breakfast.

(2) Breakfast is a very important meal as it helps to reactivate your
metabolism after fasting during a period ranging anywhere between five and twelve hours. A good breakfast should compensate for 25% of your daily energy needs.

(3) This activity also has the added benefit of engaging people into
physical activity, something that DFC believes is key at helping
Canadians achieve and maintain a better health.

Trenholm says that he hopes this partnership will also create awareness about the need for all people to choose a healthy lifestyle and to consume more milk products.

"One of the peripheral goals of the event is to highlight what people
are capable of doing when they choose to live a healthy lifestyle. Few
people can say they have bicycled an entire province, 278 km, in one
day.  Even fewer can say that by bicycling they have helped change the world and make life better for our children - for our communities."

When asked about how he is training for this event and how he
incorporates milk in his diet, Trenholm is quick to point out his family
consumes 16 litres of milk per week.  Trenholm regularly trains and drinks chocolate milk as a post-workout drink.

"Chocolate milk has been proven to be one of the best post-workout
energy drinks," says Trenholm.

"You can disregard your expensive sports drinks and grab a nutrient-rich, low-cost chocolate milk after your ride."

When asked about the importance of this partnership, Trenholm raises his bicycle helmet high in the air: "the goals of Dairy Farmers
of Canada and the Biking for Breakfast Challenge mirror one another
quite nicely: healthy living, nutrition, and grassroots community-based."

About Dairy Farmers of Canada

"The Canadian Community Health Survey that was released in 2006
revealed that too many Canadians of all ages do not consume the 2-4
daily servings of milk products as recommended in Canada's Food Guide. The survey showed that more than one third of children aged 4 to 9 do not consume two daily servings of milk products. The under-consumption rate climbs as children get older as the same survey showed that 61% of teenage boys and 83% of teenage girls do not consume enough milk products for their age group.

That is why the team of dietitians at Dairy Farmers of Canada is
committed to provide to consumers, educators and health professionals
accurate up-to-date information on the nutritional benefits of milk and
milk products.

DFC's registered dietitians are actively involved in working
cooperatively, all year long, with other health professionals and
government representatives to ensure that standards, regulations and
information designed to promote healthy eating among Canadian consumers accurately reflects the nutritional profile of milk and milk products.

The many essential nutrients found in milk and milk products not only
play a role in building and maintaining healthy bones and teeth but they
also help in reducing the risk of several diseases and conditions. Milk
and milk products may also help in achieving and maintaining a healthy
body weight.

"We feel it is our role to inform Canadians on the many health benefits
that come with making milk products part of their day ", says Roy.

About Biking for Breakfast Challenge

The Biking for Breakfast Challenge is the only road cycling charity
event in North America that travels across a complete province in one
single day. This event is fully supported on rural country roads, some
near traffic-free, alongside some of P.E.I.'s most gently touched
landscape, farmer's fields, and always within minutes of one of P.E.I.'s
five dozen sandy beaches. Riders can register for the entire tip to tip
(278 km) or a various partial courses. The event takes place on the
first Saturday in August annually. More information can be found by
visiting their website at

One Person; Two Votes
Your Chance to vote for a better tomorrow

There are two ways to get your voice heard.  The first way is a video contest by Mountain Equipment Co-op.  Bob Stanley's BFBC 2007 video is in the running for $2,000.  If you want to help our charity event obtain funding that will translate into more children eating breakfast on P.E.I., then please take 5 seconds to place your vote for the BFBC Video (and send it to friends, family, & co-workers).  $2,000 will go a long way to support this event.

The second voting opportunity is a better late than never activity.  Voting is now open for the 2007 Summerside Cycling Club Awards.  Last year's hectic season and work over the winter has pushed back the voting process.  Voting will be open for two weeks (June 3 - 16, 2008) followed by one week for voting.  The Awards up for Grabs are the following:

1.  Yellow Jersey - Rider who overcame adversity during the year
2.   Spare Tube Award - Rider who suffered through terrible luck / mechanical problems during the year
3.   Domestique Award - Rider who worked behind the scenes to make 2007 awesome
4.   Volunteer of the Year
5.   Rookie of the Year
6.   Endurance Event of the Year
7.   Training Course of the Year

Summerside Cycling Cup Update
Chandler Most Improved after two events

Harvey Chandler of Charlottetown is the most improved rider of the SCC after two training rides.  Chandler cut an impressive 35 seconds from his previous best on the Indian River 12.1 km course.  In fact, Chandler is the only rider to post a personal best improvement this year (of course, the season is still very young).

The Summerside Cycling Cup is a series of training rides aimed to encourage riders to develop their strength, speed, and endurance.  The time trial events travel to four different communities across PEI four times during the 2008 season: Miscouche, Indian River, Crapaud, and Rocky Point.  Points are awarded for riders who set a new personal best for the year as well as overall rank at the end of the ride.

The overall point standings are as follows:

Training Regime Update . . .
Year Long training program being developed

Dave Clark, Ben Kennedy, and myself have developed a template training regime for the year.  It is my hope we will implement the year-long training program for the 2009 season by focusing on what events we will be training for.  People will be given the opportunity to use this training program if they wish.

The training program focuses on strength and speed training, endurance, nutrition, flexibility, and core development.

I see the Winter being the time to define what events we are training for and to define our goals for the up-coming season.  For those interested in being a part of this training, please drop me a line.

Monday Night Beginner Group Rides
A new group riding series is added to the SCC Calendar

Some people tell us that they would love to come out and bicycle but they have a fear of the traffic, or it is just hard to motivate themselves.  If you fit into these, or other categories, or know someone who does, you are the majority.  Recent studies site the number one reason why people -- who want to bicycle -- decide not to, is out of fear of being hurt while cycling.

The benefit to participating in this new Monday Night Series is that many of the riders will be new to group riding, some may not have been on the bicycle for some time.  It is not about speed: The pace will be moderate; it is not about seeing if you can drop the group on the first climb; it is about brining people together to share a physical activity you can do your entire lifetime.

And, for those that need that little motivation to hit the saddle, group riding provides that.  You'll come to count down the days until the next ride and wonder if your new friends will come out as well.

Thanks to the initiative of Dave Clark of Summerside who introduced the idea and to both Dave and Kirk Steele (also of Summerside) who will be volunteering their time to be the Ride Captains of the Monday Night Beginner Group Rides.

During these rides, Dave and Kirk will answer your questions and will help you understand just how much fun cycling is.  Although these rides are geared for the beginners, the rides are open to anyone who wishes to join in who share the same philosophy as above: maintaining a moderate pace and everyone rides together.  If enough people show up to warrant two different groups, that is a possibility also.

SCC Training Rides expand to Crapaud & Rocky Point in June
Club's most popular training rides are taken on the road

The most popular training rides for our Club are the Time Trials.  Unlike official TT races where the starting sequence is based on the finishing times in preceding races (as in stage races), our TT starting positions have more to do with what people are comfortable with than anything else.  Some riders like to get out first, others in the middle, others do not like to be passed so they start last.  Even some riders show up late and then ride the course and meet up with the gang at the end or send their time to the Ride Captain.

With the addition of a Crapaud 19 km TT and a Rocky Point 18.3 km TT, that brings the total number of training TTs to four for the Club.  These two new TTs join the Miscouche 12.4 TT (entering its fourth year in the circuit) and the Indian River 12.1 TT (entering its third year)

Riders regularly set-out to set a faster time than they rode previously, with over 60 per cent of the riders improving their times historically.  Riders earn points for time improvement and overall ranking.

Flexible, Fun, and we are always encouraging each other to set a new personal best.

Our most popular rides for a reason -- check out these two new courses for a good ole fashioned dose of peer encouragement and enthusiasm.

Early Registration Deadline June 15
The Early Registration Deadline for the fourth annual Biking for Breakfast Challenge is June 15.  If you register before this date, your registration fee is only $10.00.  After this date, the cost is $25.00.  Already 29 people are registered and it is still 2 months before the event.  We are well within our goal of 115 riders!

Entering its fourth year, the 278 km tip to tip bicycle fund-raiser for Island breakfast programs will be making a major announcement in the weeks to come about a new national partnership that will help the event move closer to achieving its goal: to have a breakfast program in all Island schools by the year 2020.

2 km or 278 km: Every Pedal Stroke Matters!
Our goal is to have 115 riders on August 2 take on the Challenge and raise over $15,000.  Riders can elect to ride the entire course or any number of partial courses.  The first 50 riders to register get a free T-Shirt.  All riders help us reach our goal to have a free and universal breakfast program in all Island schools by the year 2020.

Youth Eco-Bicycle Olympics
A new event has been added to BFBC this year.  Now, instead of the event rolling on one day, it is a BFBC Weekend.  The new youth event is a bicycle skill and eco-learning series of fun and interactive activities that the entire family will enjoy.  We are looking for individuals to assist in the planning and volunteering for this event.  If interested, please drop us a line soon.

New SEA-PEI Bicycle Tour
BFBC Official Training Series kicks off on May 24 (new date)

SEA PEI

Does the idea of learning about buried treasure, ghosts who walk the Island, phantom trains, and phantom ships while covering all of PEI's scenic coastal drives by bicycle sound like the perfect Island-get-away?  Of course it does.  Join dozens of cyclists who experience the lore of Canada's smallest province with the strangest legends.  One truly unique Island bicycle adventure!

The purpose of the SEA PEI Bicycle Tour is to provide an organized activity whereby cyclists can bicycle all of PEI scenic routes in 5 days under an experienced "Legend Leader" who will tell the stories of the Island so that Island tales will be preserved and shared.  There will be two pace groups during the day and each pace group will consist of a Legend Leader.  Instead of doing it 5 days in a row, each ride is scheduled on a Saturday and the last ride is a Saturday / Sunday camping combo.  The pace group speeds are: 20-25 kph and 26 + kph.

Here are the remaining dates (9 a.m. start times):

June 21
Summerside (150 km or 102 km)

July 8
Victoria by the Sea (203 km or 99 km)

July 19
Brudenell North (198 km or 93 km)

July 20
Brudenell South (196 km or 90 km)

The 90 - 100 K loop will not have a Legend Leader.

SCC Club Jerseys
4 more jerseys needed
Jersey

Rob Cook is looking for a few good men or women.  Well, actually, four to be exact.  We require four more people to place an order for a SCC jersey before we can place the order.

The colours this year Rob reports our distributor as commenting are even more "vibrant."  Hard to imagine.

Discounted Jerseys
Two riders have jerseys that are a little snug on them and are willing to offer them at discounted prices.  I think the sizing on the jerseys were a little small as my SCC jersey is much tighter than others I own.

2 Large Jerseys (but fits like mediums) - Wes Jackshaw (willing to hand them over for half price or $40) ehs@eastlink.ca

1 Medium Jersey - Leo Flood (looking at $50) guyflood@gmail.com

So, with the smaller sizing, it seems it best to go for one size larger than you would normally wear in a jersey.

Volunteer Today!

It is the membership and work done by so many volunteers that continue to help spread the word of what it means to lead the lifestyle of a bicyclist.  Take a look at our Committee Page that lists the various roles of our volunteers.

Here are a few of our current opportunities:

BFBC Support Drivers (Aug 2: 6 am to 9 pm)
The role of the Support Driver during the Biking for Breakfast Challenge is extremely rewarding and very much appreciated by the riders.  The event is happening on August 2.  There is also a volunteer meeting two days before the event that volunteers are encouraged to attend.

Sprockids Leaders / Assistants (90 min per week: 6 weeks)
It is hard to image how as little as 90 minutes once a week can make you feel so good about giving back to the lifestyle that means so much to you.  And, of course, sharing it with kids who are like sponges, absorbing every delight you have to offer -- it does not get any better. This program runs annually and we are always looking for people wanting to share the joy of bicycling with children.

Walmart Helmet Fit Day (June 14: 10 am - 3 pm)
ThinkFirst Canada, PEI Chapter of the Island Network for Injury Prevention (INIP) are looking for volunteers to assist with helmet fit on this day at the Summerside Walmart and Charlottetown Walmart locations.  Contact Sally Lockhart at 902-859-2500 or email Rhonda at garland_rhonda@hotmail.com

SEA PEI Bicycle Tour Pace Group / Legend Leaders (Various Dates)
The stories are wonderful and the pace is pleasant.  SCC is looking for riders who would be interested in being the Legend Leaders / Pace Group Leaders for the for the 25 kph and under group.
