*Please note: PB (15 pts) relates to PB set within this year only; LYI (10 pts) relates to an improvement from the last year (Last Year Improvement). You can only get one LYI per course where you can get many PB's throughout the year on the same course. I reversed PB and Improve names to accurately relate what each stands for. Individual results previous to July 5 need to be read with this in mind.

Also, a 3/4 figure under PB means out of 4 opportunities to set a new personal best for the year, the rider set a new personal best 3 times. A 1/2 figure on LYI translates into out of a potential to set a faster time on 2 courses throughout the year (based on last year's time), the rider was able to do it once.

Individual Training Event Details

> > > Sep 16, 2006, Indian River Time Trial, 36.3 km
Starters: 7

Details of Event:

The final road training event for the Summerside Cycling Club assembled seven riders for a final shot at strong performances on the route employed season long for the Indian River time trials, held every other Wed. evening. Saturday's total distance featured 3 laps of the course, totalling 36.3 km. There was a touch of Indian Summer in the air as the riders set forth from Indian River Church beneath a hazy sun into a brisk SW wind. They included Dave Clark (Summerside), Ben Kennedy (Kensington), Leo Flood of Kinkora, Ernie Schleichkorn (Summerside), Mark Bowlan (Stratford), Rob Cook (Travellers Rest), and Paul Wright from Bedeque.

The seven rode tightly in a group for about 5 km, taking turns at the front to counteract the headwind. Suddenly, Clark and Bowlan burst from the pack and created a gap of perhaps 20 seconds. They were followed in short order by Wright, who stormed off in furious pursuit, but was unsuccessful in catching the duo who took turns drafting to conserve their strength. Bowlan nudged Clark by a tire length in the exciting sprint which concluded the first lap at the Church in 20:05, with Wright back some 32 seconds. Behind them, the other riders worked together for a time.

At the end of lap 2, it was again Bowlan over Clark in the sprint, by a razor-thin margin, with Wright gamely lurking about 18 seconds back, while still battling the wind solo. On the final lap, the order of finish was established as Flood broke from the sub group and settled solidly into fourth position, while Cook and Kennedy continued to share wind breaking duties until close to the end.

For the top three riders it was a startling debut for the 36.3 k course, with each finishing well under Wes Jackshaw's old mark of 1:03:57 from August '05. Bowlan nipped Clark by a single second at the line (1:02:04 to 1:02:05), followed by Wright just 29 second later.. However, it was Kinkora's own Leo Flood who would wear the crown of most improved rider for theday. Flood powered up the final climb to a solid fourth at 1:08:37,and, like a lion would bite an amazing 10:49 from his personal best! Flood had also finished the season with a tidal wave of great personal best performances on both the Indian River and Miscouche TT courses. Impressive too was Ben Kennedy as he improved his best time for the 36.3 km course by 7:07, and finished in fifth just 10 seconds after Rob Cook, who clocked in for the day at 1:10:13. Cook was the third rider to improve his PR as he lopped 36 seconds from his old time. Ernie Schleichkorn rounded out the field arriving in 1:20:30.

The overall ride results for the day are as follows:

Men
1. Mark Bowlan (Stratford) 1:02:04 (35.11 kph)
2. Dave Clark (Summerside) 1:02:05 (35.11 kph)
3. Paul Wright (Bedeque) 1:02:33 (34.84 kph)
4. Leo Flood (Kinkora) 1:08:33 (31.79 kph) improved PB by 10:49
5. Rob Cook (Travellers Rest) 1:10:13 (31.03 kph) improved PB by 0:36
6. Ben Kennedy (Kensington) 1:10:23 (30.95 kph) improved PB by 7:07
7. Ernie Schleichkorn (Summerside) 1:20:30 (27.07 kph)

Cyclists on the track for first ever DQ Cycling Cup.
Cyclists on the track for first ever DQ Cycling Cup.

Details of Event: The first-ever Dairy Queen Cycling Cup brought out nine riders in 4 different age categories. The event was held at the Evangeline School track.

Austin Trenholm rode smoothly to capture the title of Under 7 DQ Cycling Cup Champion for the year.

The second start was a mixed age group with female / male riders between 7 years of age and 10 years old.

Alysha Trenholm took home the female Under 9 Championship while Matthew Tanton earned the male under 9 Championship.

Nicholas Tanton, riding in the under 13 age group, also took home the Under 13 DQ Cycling Cup Championship.

As for the adult category, there were five riders out for today's event: Rob Cook (Travellers Rest), Ben Kennedy (Kensington), Dave Clark (Summerside), Ernie Schliechkorn (Summerside), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside).

The group stayed together for the first five minutes and on the sprint lap on the backstretch with a headwind, Trenholm attacked on the outside of the course. Clark was quick to respond and caught the corner on the inside first heading to the home stretch sprint. Trenholm came out of the saddle but Clark had gapped Trenholm in the corner and Clark took first in the sprint, followed by Trenholm, Kennedy, and Cook.

The riders then re-grouped and awaited the attack for the second sprint. Kennedy attacked the group on the homestretch with the hopes of gaining some ground on the pack on the windy backstretch. Trenholm was on Kennedy's wheel but Trenholm lost his line into the corner as Clark soon moved up into position. Clark was able to pass Kennedy about 50 meters to the line to take first in the second sprint. Trenholm second, Kennedy thrid, and Cook fourth.

Following another re-grouping of the riders after the second sprint, with two laps to go, Trenholm had the pull and pushed the pace for one lap. At this point, it was only Trenholm and Clark in a battle for the finish. Entering the final corner, Trenholm again went wide and Clark got his front wheel ahead and then powered to the finish with a 10 bike length victory over Trenholm. Kennedy was third, followed by Cook, then Schliechkorn.

The overall ride results for the day are as follows:

10 Cyclists battle the wind and hills in Indian River.
10 Cyclists battle the wind and hills in Indian River.

Details of Event: The second last Indian River Time Trial brought out 10 cyclists as they attempted to battle the high winds and rainy conditions to set personal bests: Ardelle Hynes (North Rustico), Kenny Sampson (North Rustico), Ben Kennedy (Kensington), Leo Flood (Kinkora), Harvey Chandler (Charlottetown), Jennifer Power-Hawrylak (Summerside), Dave Clark (Summerside), Paul Wright (Bedeque), Scott Clark (Summerside), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside).

Today the hard Northern wind was too much for the cyclists as nobody was able to set a new personal best. However, the course times were still impressive.

For instance, Chandler of Charlottetown was the rider who was closest to setting a new personal best time, missing out by only 11 seconds. Scott Clark of Summerside was only 16 seconds slower than his previous best.

The race for second overall in the point standings for the Men's division has heated up. Wes Jackshaw who is recovering from a mid-season injury holds a slim lead in second place with 790 points, followed by Leo Flood (741 points), Dave Clark (727 points), and Ben Kennedy (684). With four events remaining to garner points, the race for a top three podium placement just may come down to the final event, with finish and sprint points available.

As for the Women, Jennifer Power-Hawrylak (Summerside) took over first place overall for the Women's Point Standings for the season with her ride today.

Summerside Crit

Starters: 4

Details of Event: The last Training Criterium for the Summerside Cycling Club had 4 cyclists on the route: Ben Kennedy (Kensington), Leo Flood (Kinkora), Dave Clark (Summerside), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside).

Today's event would crown the top three Crit riders for the Summerside Cycling Club this year. The early morning chill was soon replaced with grinding gears and quick turns in the Summerside Industrial Park.

The foursome rode together for the first part of the ride with each rider taking their turn at the front at one lap intervals.

At the 15 minute mark, Trenholm was leading the pack entering the incline on the backstretch toward the sprint lap. Trenholm jumped off the saddle and gapped the pack. Trenholm captured first in sprint one, followed by Clark, Flood, and Kennedy.

The second sprint was a different situation. Kennedy took over the lead of the pack on the sprint lap and held the lead until 50 meters to the line. At that point, Trenholm was beside Kennedy on one side and Clark on the other. Trenholm's right foot came out of the pedals at sprint speed and that gave Clark enough time to sneak in ahead of Trenholm for sprint number two. Kennedy was third and Flood, whose chain came off and was riding on his shoe, cross the sprint in fourth.

All was set up for a sprint to the finish. Trenholm took the lead from Kennedy on the incline and started to push the pace with two laps remaining. With three corners remaining, Clark took the lead and then Flood made his move to the front on the backstretch. Coming out of the final corner to the finish, Flood was leading the way, followed by Trenholm then Clark.

Trenholm then moved to the left, Clark to the right, as both riders split between Flood. Trenholm was a tire length in front and once again his food unclipped from the pedal. Trenholm could see Clark on his right pounding away at the pedals and thought he had no time to reclick his foot in the pedal so Trenholm attempted to finish the ride pedalling with just his left foot. After three pedal strokes, his left foot as well came out of the pedal, leaving no feet pedaling. Clark pulled ahead of Trenholm at the line, followed by Flood in third and Kennedy in fouth.

Flood caught the action of what he called Trenholm looking "like an airplane coming in for a landing" with his landing gear down at the finsih.

Jeff Proctor (left) of Litchfield, New Hamphire earned second place with 192 points with Ben Kennedy (right) of Kensington capturing third place on the podium with 154 points during the two day event.
Details of Event: What began as a day of mishaps and forgetfulness turned into one indisputable enjoyable day of riding for the Summerside Cycling Club.

The second and final stage of the King of Kinkora event began with one rider forgetting his bicycling shoes and having to return home to pick them up, followed by another rider forgetting to take his water bottle on the bike, followed yet by another cyclist having front deraileur problems that made the heavy climbing near epic, and, lastly, followed by one rider having a flat tire with 1 km to go and walking his bike across the finish line.

The King of Kinora Mountains was created this year to provide the Club an opportunity to train on the Island's most challenging route (the Kinkora road) and to earn King of Kinkora Mountain points. At the end of two training rides, the rider with the top points will be crowned the "King of Kinkora".

This Saturday's ride brought out 7 riders: Jeff Proctor (New Hampshire), Ben Kennedy (Kensington), Paul Wright (Bedeque), Ernie Schleichkorn (Summerside), Bob Stanley (Charlottetown), Ralph Leonard (Conn., USA), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside).

 3. Ben Kennedy (154 pts)
 4. Ken Trenholm (124 pts)
 5. Wes Jackshaw (122 pts)

 7. Ralph Leonard (80 pts)
 8. Leo Flood (75 pts)
 9. Ernie Schliehkorn (64 pts)
 10. Bob Stanley (2 pts)

The group rode together for the first two small ascents but soon the climbs grew to 230 feet and then 273 feet and that split up the group. At the tail end of a 310 foot descent the group reached speeds close to 70 km/h.

The first sprint location for King of Kinkora points was at the top of a 381 foot climb at the 20 km mark.

By this time, most of the group had re-joined the leaders. Proctor was leading out down the decline. Trenholm's plan was to attack this sprint early and catch riders by surprise. Trenholm jumped past Proctor before the ascent was finished and pounded on the pedals on the upstroke. Within a few metres to the sprint finish, Trenholm's foot came out of the pedal and he could not get it back in. He then scrambled to pedal with his heal and then the bike went off the road. Wright was gaining quick as Trenholm was in the dirt with the first sprint within 6 metres. Trenholm was able to hang on to first at the sprint, followed by Wright, Proctor, Leonard, Kennedy, and Schliechkorn.

Leonard was suffering with his front deraileur problems and on two occassions riders attempted to help Leonard on the side of the road and make some ajustments. Although the assistance may have offered some solice; it offered little in terms of technical assistance.

At the turn around location (at the 30 km mark), Kennedy was leading the pack and built a considerable gap over the chase group that consisted of Proctor, Wright, and Leonard. Trenholm and Schleichkorn were trying to bridge the gap to reach the chase group.

The second sprint location for King of Kinkora points was at the top of a hard 270 foot climb followed by another 110 foot incline at the 47 km marker.

By this time, Wright, Trenholm, and Proctor could see Kennedy atop the final decent to the next sprint. Kennedy grabbed a quick drink from the water bottle and started the decline. Kennedy held on to the lead until 100 metres into the climb as Wright hammered up the hill. Trenholm was soon to follow and got on Wright's wheel. As both Wright and Trenholm were entering the largest grade on the climb, Trenholm knew this was the time to attack. Out of the saddle, Trenholm verred away from Wright's wheel and slammed the pedals. Once ahead of Wright by 5 bike lengths, Trenholm got settled back in the saddle. There was still a few hundred metres to the finish of the sprint. Trenholm eventually took first, followed by Wright, Proctor, Kennedy, Leonard, and Schliechkorn.

Trenholm was expecting the lead group to re-group and ride together until the finish. Wright had other ideas. Wright powered past Trenholm on the climb following the sprint. Trenholm was waiting for Proctor and then he and Proctor would ride together. Once Trenholm got to the top of the hill, Wright had about a 2 minute lead on Trenholm. The waiting game was then over as Trenholm attempted to bridge the gap to Wright. There would be no catching the powerful Wright on this day.

The overall training ride results for the day are as follows:

Men
1. Paul Wright (Bedeque) 2:10:51
2. Ken Trenholm (Summerside) 2:13:31
3. Jeff Proctor (New Hampshire, USA)  2:14:41  improved PB by 1:40

5. Ben Kennedy (Kensington) 2:31:18 improved PB by 6:01
6. Ernie Schleichkorn (Summerside) 2:45:00
7. Bob Stanley (Charlottetown) DNF

Kennedy was the most improved rider for the day, taking 6 minutes and one second off his previous personal best on this course. Proctor was the other rider to improve his time for the course by 1 minute and 40 seconds.

The following points were awarded today: Trenholm 122 (45-2nd; 50-sprints; 25-bonus; 2-start); Wright 117 (50-1st; 40-sprint; 25-bonus; 2-start); Proctor 112 (40-3rd; 30-sprint; 25-bonus; 15-PB; 2-start); Kennedy 90 (30-5th; 18-sprints; 15-PB; 25-bonus; 2-start); Leonard 80 (35-4th; 18-sprints; 25-bonus; 2-start); Schliechkorn 64 (25-6th; 12-sprints; 25-bonus; 2-start); and Stanley 2 (2-start).

Details of Event:

On a day where Floyd Landis finished second in the Individual Time Trial at the Tour de France, creating a gap of minutes between him and the other race favorites, the Summerside Cycling Club had their own King of the Mountains training ride in Kinkora on Saturday.

Both of these events had some similarities. While Landis had mechanical problems (a flat tire) and quickly had his team car provide a new bike for him immediately, Ken Trenholm of the Summerside also had mechanical problems on this day after a descent of 72 kilometers-per-hour in the lead group, Trenholm's spoke broke in his rear wheel, forcing him to depart the course. No new bike was readily available. This was Trenholm's second broken spoke of the season.

The King of Kinora Mountains was created this year to provide the Club an opportunity to train on the Island's most challenging route (the Kinkora road) and to earn King of Kinkora Mountain points. At the end of two training rides, the rider with the top points will be crowned the "King of Kinkora".

This Saturday's ride was the first of the two King of Kinkora Mountain rides and brought out 7 riders: Jeff Proctor (New Hampshire), Jason Linger (Charlottetown), Wes Jackshaw (Summerside), Ben Kennedy (Kensington), Leo Flood (Kinkora), Paul Wright (Bedeque), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside).

The group rode together for the first two small ascents but soon the climbs grew to 230 feet and then 273 feet and that split up the group. At the tail end of a 310 foot descent is where Trenholm's spoke broke.

The first sprint location for King of Kinkora points was at the top of a 381 foot climb at the 20 km mark.

Linger and Jackshaw were leading in the sprint. Linger got the jump on Jackshaw and hammered up the 400 meter section and won the sprint by 50 meters, followed by Jackshaw, and then Wright. Flood, Proctor, and Kennedy rounded out the first King of Kinkora sprint points.

The second sprint location for King of Kinkora points was at the top of a hard 270 foot climb followed by another 110 foot incline at the 47 km marker.

Jackshaw took a different strategy on the second sprint. He first took the lead out and then settled behind Linger's wheel about mid-way point. Jackshaw then using the draft of Linger powered over him to the end of the sprint with Linger taking second, and Wright third at the sprint, followed by Proctor, Flood, and Kennedy.

The ride to the finish for top spot was a game of cat and mouse for Jackshaw and Linger. At the end, Jackshaw got the jump on Linger following a spell on Linger's wheel. Jackshaw took first by one tire length over Linger. Wright, Proctor, Flood, and Kennedy rounded out the riders for the day.

The overall training ride results are as follows:

Men
1. Wes Jackshaw (Summerside) 1:54:29 (31.45 km/h)
2. Jason Linger (Charlottetown) 1:54:29 (31.45 km/h)
3. Paul Wright (Bedeque) 1:58:11 (30.47 km/h)
4. Jeff Proctor (New Hampshire) 2:16:20 (26.41 km/h)
5. Leo Flood (Kinkora) 2:16:45 (26.33 km/h)
6. Ben Kennedy (Kensington) 2:37:19 (22.89 km/h)
7. Ken Trenholm (Summerside) DNF

The following points were awarded during this ride and are the leaders of the King of Kinkora Mountains after Stage 1: Jackshaw 122 (50-1st; 45-Sprints; 25-Bonus; 2-start), Linger 117 (45-2nd; 45-Sprints; 25-Bonus; 2-start), Wright 97 (40-3rd; 30-Sprints; 25-Bonus; 2-start), Proctor 80 (35-4th; 18-Sprints; 25-Bonus; 2-start); Flood 75 (30-5th; 18-Sprints; 25-Bonus; 2-start); Kennedy 64 (25-6th; 12-Sprints; 25-Bonus; 2-start), and Trenholm 2 (2-start). Riders were awarded 25 additional points for finishing the challenging ride.

Details of Event: The 12th training ride for the Summerside Cycling Club was the final criterium training before the Slemon Park Hotel & Conference Centre PEI BIke Fest on July 15 & 16. Two first-time training cyclists came out on this day: Paul Dalton (St. Louis, PE) and Harvey Chandler (Charlottetown).

They were joined by Dave Clark (Summerside), Mark Bowlan (Stratford), Wes Jackshaw (Summerside), Leo Flood (Kinkora), Jeff Proctor (New Hampshire), Jules Aucoin (Summerside), Ben Kennedy (Kensington), Rob Cook (Travellers Rest), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside).

The pack of 11 cyclists stayed together for the better part of the ride until a few laps before the first sprint.

A group of four riders built a gap on the others and entering the first corner of the sprint lap, Clark, Trenholm, Bowlan, and Jackshaw entered the corner.

Bowlan jumped the group from third position in the first corner. Trenholm eventually got on Bowlan's wheel by the second last turn to the sprint finish. Bowlan went a little wide in the last corner as both riders were off the saddle sprinting to the line. Bowlan captured first in the sprint by 5 bike lengths in front of Trenholm. Clark and Jackshaw took third and fourth for the sprint.

The lead group of 4 turned into a lead group of 3 following the first sprint.

At the second sprint location, 20 laps into the ride, Clark led out quickly followed by Trenholm and Jackshaw. Trenholm overtook Clark on the home stretch to take first in the second sprint, followed by Clark, Jackshaw, and then Bowlan.

The ride to the finish was a battle between Jackshaw, Clark, and Trenholm. Trenholm took the lead on the final lap and paced the trio. As Trenholm picked up speed, Clark was able to stick on his wheel dispute Trenholm attempting to shake him off. Coming out of the final corner, Clark was gaining on Trenholm but Trenholm managed to pull ahead and took first at the line, followed by Clark, and then Jackshaw.

Trenholm was the sole rider to improve his personal best on the course by 1 minute and 43 seconds. Jackshaw completed the course on a mountain bike.

All riders set strong times to improve on for the next criterium training ride.

The day was a hard finish for Ben Kennedy who blew a flat tire with half a lap left in the ride.

The overall training ride results are as follows:

Men
1. Ken Trenholm (Summerside) 0:47:03 (34.44 km/h) improved PB by 1:43

Details of Event: It seems that riders of the Summerside Cycling Club are setting new course records every time they put their behind on the saddle these days . . . last night was no exception.

The Indian River Time Trial once again proved to be no match for the riders. 10 out of the 12 starters continued their winning ways and improved their own personal best times.

Topping the list of the most improved riders, and setting a new single time trial course record for personal improvement, was Nancy Woodington of Kensington. Woodington was like a cat in the saddle poucing up the hills and battling the wind to knock 4 minutes and 25 seconds off her previous time. Cutting this much time in a short 12.1 km course will be a tough benchmark to beat and is almost unheard of in cycling circles.

Chris Gallant of Summerside held the previous single course time trial improvement record. However, not to be out done, on this day, Gallant continued his improvement by being the most improved male rider. Gallant shaved off 1 minute and 34 seconds and brought his average speed over 30 kilometres-per-hour.

First-time course rider, Mark Bowlan of Stratford, had the quickest time for the day for the men, averaging 35.07 kilometres-per-hour, and was just 11 seconds short of the course record held by Wes Jackshaw of Summerside at 20 minutes and 33 seconds.

Other riders to set new benchmarks for themselves were: Leo Flood (Kinkora) who cut off 1 minute and 6 seconds; Chris Silvaggio (Summerside) who improved by 1 minute; Jason Linger (Charlottetown), 49 seconds; Rob Cook (Travellers Rest), 26 seconds; Dave Clark (Summerside), 20 seconds; Ben Kennedy (Kensington), 17 seconds; Jeff Hemphill (Summerside), 13 seconds; and Paul Wright (Bedeque), 6 seconds.

Second year club veteran, Ernie Schleihkorn of Summerside, also turned in a solid time on the challenging course.

The overall training ride results are as follows:

Women
1. Nancy Woodington (Kensington) 0:25:45 (28.21 km/h) improved PB by 4:25

Men
1. Mark Bowlan (Stratford) 0:20:44 (35.07 km/h)

Conditions: Sunny

Details of Event: The ninith training event for the Summerside Cycling Club was an important ride for the club. Important not because it was a hilly and challenging ride and not because it was the first Saturday in a few weeks that it did not rain -- but important because this course is the same course that will have over 100 cyclists competing for top spot during the July 15 -16 P.E.I. Bike Fest.

A total of ten riders participated in training on this day: Kenny Sampson (North Rustico), Leo Flood (Kinkora), Chris Gallant (Summerside), Rob Cook (Travellers Rest), Ben Kennedy (Kensington), Dave Clark (Summerside), Paul Wright (Bedeque), Ernie Schleichkorn (Summerside), Wes Jackshaw (Summerside), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside).

The group of ten riders rode in a double echelon for the first 20 km, each taking their turn at the front. As the group started to enter more challenging terrain, the group of ten riders began to split.

At the first sprint location, 32.7 km into the training ride, there were four riders who were in the lead group and with less than half a kilometre to the sprint, entering the corner, their order was Clark leading, followed closely by Trenholm, Jackshaw, and Wright.

As Clark entered the turn, Trenholm noticed a room on the inside and Trenholm got out of the saddle and started to accelerate and had two bike lengths on the other riders. The other riders were quick to respond. The sprint speeds were clocked at 52 km/h with Trenholm capturing first in the sprint, followed second by Jackshaw, then Clark.

The lead group continued to work together as riders behind them tackled the wind and the terrain alone or with another rider.

The second sprint would prove to be even more demanding on the cyclists. Unlike the first sprint on a flat road, this sprint was on a hard ascent to the crest of a hill. The lead group of four had turned into a lead group of three as 50 km into the ride, a rider was dropped.

Now it was Jackshaw, Trenholm, with Wright pulling up the hill in front.

As Wright pulled to the left, Jackshaw threw his body up and hammered out of the saddle to make a gap between him and the other two riders. Trenholm was able to stick to Jackshaw's wheel for the first 10 seconds but Jackshaw showed another burst of energy and crossed the line first in the hill sprint with five bike lengths ahead of Trenholm. Wright took third in the hill sprint.

Everything was shapping up for a hard finish on this hilly and windy day for all the riders.

The three lead riders re-grouped and rode together with 15 km to the finish. With two climbs remaining to the finish, Jackshaw was drafting behind Wright and then accerlated out of the saddle. Trenholm was quick to respond and brought Jackshaw back near the crest of the hill. By this time Jackshaw and Trenholm had gapped Wright. On the final climb of the day, Jackshaw was drafting behind Trenholm and again powered over Trenholm from behind to attempt to break away. Trenholm again responded and managed to get back on Jackshaw's wheel at the crest of the final hill.

All that was left now was one corner and the final sprint.

Jackshaw and Trenholm rode side-by-side and then Jackshaw got behind Trenholm's wheel in preparation of the sprint. Trenholm entered the corner first and hammered out of the saddle with Jackshaw out of the saddle as well. Trenholm had a small gap on Jackshaw but Jackshaw was gaining ground as the finish was in sight. Jackshaw eventually bike handled his way to beside Trenholm's back wheel and then to half a bike length. Trenholm took the finish by one half a tire length at the time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 28 seconds. Wright was third to finish at 29 seconds behind.

The other training riders were still on the course and battling the hills and the wind, some with another rider but most not having the benefit of drafting with another rider. The day proved to be a hard training challenge for all.

The overall training ride results are as follows:

Men
1. Ken Trenholm (Summerside) 2:09:28 (30.83 km/h)

Details of Event: The eighth training event for the Summerside Cycling Club was a day of personal bests, course records, and four first-time training riders: Mark Bowlan (Stratford), Ardelle Hynes (North Rustico), Kenny Sampson (North Rustico), and Scott Clark (Summerside).

These first-time riders were joined by Leo Flood (Kinkora), Chris Gallant (Summerside), Rob Cook (Traveller's Rest), Jules Aucoin (Summerside), Chris Silvaggio (Summerside), Ben Kennedy (Kensington), Ernie Schleichkorn (Summerside), Wes Jackshaw (Summerside), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside).

The atmospheric conditions played in the hands of the time trialists today with a slight SW wind.

An incredible nine Club riders improved their performance since their last training on the course two weeks ago.

The highlight would come from the saddle of Chris Gallant of Summerside, who cut 2:34 off his previous personal best. This ride earned Gallant the largest single course improvement in the Club's history -- a record that was set by Ben Kennedy one week ago.

As for Kennedy, he continued to improve this personal best by leaps and bounds by snapping off 1:59 from his previous personal best.

The third most improved rider for the day was Chris Silvaggio (Summerside) who completed the course with an average speed of 34.93 km/h and took 1:48 off his previous best time.

Other riders that improved were Jules Aucion (Summerside) by 1:30, Leo Flood (Kinkora) by 1:27, Rob Cook (Traveller's Rest) by 0:50, Wes Jackshaw (Summerside) by 0:48, Ken Trenholm (Summerside) by 0:40, and Ernie Schleickorn (Summerside) by 0:06.

Another highlight of the day was Jackshaw's performance. Not only did Jackshaw improve his time but set a course record on the 12.4 km ride. Jackshaw finished the course in 19:04, six seconds faster than the course record set by Geoff MacDonald (Charlottetown) in 2005.

For the four riders who tackled the course for the first time, they will return in two weeks and attempt to improve on the solid benchmarks they set for themselves.

The overall training ride results are as follows:

Atmospheric Conditions
Wind: 30 km/h SE (gusts of 40 km/h)
Temperature: 19 Celsius

Humidity: n/a
Conditions: Partly sunny and cloudy

Details of Event: The seventh training event for the Summerside Cycling Club took four riders around the picturesque shoreline of Maximeville: Wes Jackshaw (Summerside), Ben Kennedy (Kensington), Leo Flood (Kinkora), and Dave Clark (Summerside). The 62 km course featured a strong tailwind for the first half of the ride and a strong headwind for the last half of the ride.

The group stayed together through the first sprint. The first sprint (at 20 km into the ride) was an exciting explosion of speed and bike control as the tailwind and smooth riding surface on a quiet road provided the perfect sprint location. Jackshaw edged out Kennedy for the sprint by a mere bike length.

The group remained compact and working together as a unit until the 36 km mark. At that point, Jackshaw and Clark broke away from the group of four and now two groups of two riders each were now facing the hard headwind.

Jackshaw took the second sprint (at 40 km) with Clark second in the sprint.

With Clark and Jackshaw in one group and Kennedy and Flood in the other, each group did 30 second pull at the front with a 30 second recovery on the front rider's draft.

Jackshaw gapped Clark at the last two turns Slemon Park, then stayed ahead of him to the finish.

Flood and Kennedy also worked together and agreed to end the ride together, finishing with identical times.

Jackshaw was the only rider who participated in this course last year and set a new personal best and course record at the same time, earning Jackshaw an additional 10 points for the day.

The overall training ride results are as follows:
1. Wes Jackshaw (Summerside) 1:52:39 (33.02 km/h) improved PB by 3:38
2. Dave Clark (Summerside) 1:52:45 (33.00 km/h)
3. Leo Flood (Kinkora) 2:03:50 (30.04 km/h)
3. Ben Kennedy (Kensington) 2:03:50 (30.04 km/h)

The following points were awarded on this day: Jackshaw 112 (50-1st; 50-Sprints; 10-PB; 2-Start); Clark 72 (45-2nd; 25-Sprint; 2- Start); Kennedy 67 (40-3rd; 25-Sprint; 2-Start); and Flood 42 (40-3rd; 2-Start)

Conditions: Partly sunny and cloudy

Details of Event: The sixth training event for the Summerside Cycling Club this year brought out two new faces for the ride: Paul Wright (Bedeque) and Dave Clark (Summerside).

They were joined by Leo Flood (Kinkora), Chris Gallant (Summerside), Jeff Hemphill (Summerside), Rob Cook (Traveller's Rest), Jules Aucoin (Summerside), Chris Silvaggio (Summerside), Ben Kennedy (Kensington), Ernie Schleichkorn (Summerside), Jason Linger (Charlottetown), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside).

Although the atmospheric conditions changed from sunny to cloudy and from less than 10 km/h winds to 24 km/h wind by the start of the training ride, the head and side winds and esculating rolling hills on the 12.1 km Indian River course could not shake the cyclists from their line on this day.

Four Club riders improved their performance since their last training on the course two weeks ago.

Most remarkable was Ben Kennedy of Kensington who powered on the rivet to cut an astonishing two minutes and ten seconds off his previous personal best. This ride earned Kennedy the largest single course improvement in the Club's history.

The second Summerside Club member to set a new personal best was Rob Cook of Traveller's Rest. Cook hammered in the saddle and improved his time by shaving one minute and six seconds for a new personal best time.

The two other riders to improve on the course were Jeff Hemphill (by 53 seconds) and Ken Trenholm (by 39 seconds), both riders from Summerside.

For the eight other riders who tackled the course for the first time, they will return in two weeks and attempt to improve on the benchmark they set for themselves.

And, as for the two first-time training riders who came out, Paul Wright and Dave Clark, they each averaged over 33 kilometres-per-hour.

The overall training ride results are as follows:
1. Ken Trenholm (Summerside) 0:20:55 (34.77 km/h) improved PB by 0:39
2. Jason Linger (Charlottetown) 0:21:00 (34.57 km/h)

11. Ernie Schleichkorn (Summerside) 0:25:20 (28.67 km/h)
12. Chris Gallant (Summerside) 0:25:46 (28.21 km/h)

The following training points were awarded: Trenholm 67 (50-1st; 15-Improve; 2-start); Linger 47 (45-2nd; 2-start); Wright 42 (40-3rd; 2-start); Hemphill 42 (25-6th; 15-Impove; 2-start); Clark 37 (35-4th; 2-start); Silvaggio 32 (30-5th; 2-start); Kennedy 32 (15-8th; 15-Improve; 2-start); Cook 29 (12-10th; 15-Improve; 2-start); Flood 22 (20-7th; 2-start); Aucoin 15 (13-9th; 2-start); Schleichkorn 12 (10-11th; 2-start); and Gallant 11 (9-12th; 2-start).

Ben Kennedy, Kensington, cuts 2:10 off his previous PB, earning Kennedy the largest single course improvement in the club's history.
