Improvement
Awarded on a per course basis; therefore, riders may earn 15 points if they better their time on the same course.
Does not apply if you get a DNF then finish the next race.
I hope to be able to use better watts generated at some point but require the weight of all riders and their bikes.

Sprinting
Sprint Points (awarded at various locations on course). Every course except for the time trials have Sprint Points available to be won. Sprint points are usually located at equal distances apart. For example, in a 60 km road event, there will be two Sprint Point opportunities (one at 20 k and the other at 40 k). There needs to be atleast two starters for Sprint Points to be awarded. The number of placings available for sprint points depends on the number of riders. Here is the breakdown:

2-3 Riders in Event
Winner of Sprint = 10 points

4-5 Riders in Event
Winner of Sprint = 10 points
Second in Sprint= 6 points

6-10 Riders in Event
Winner of Sprint = 10 points
Second in Sprint= 6 points
Third in Sprint= 3 points

Climbing
Climbing Points are awarded on a limited number of courses. Courses with climbing points will not have sprint points. There needs to be atleast two starters for Climbing Points to be awarded. The number of placings available for climbing points, like sprint points, depends on the number of riders. Climbs will be marked upon the approach, at the start, and at the end. Here is the breakdown:

2-3 Riders in Event
Winner of Climb = 10 points

4-5 Riders in Event
Winner of Climb = 10 points

Details of Event: Today's event marked the introduction of two new women riders to the club: Patricia Ellis (Charlottetown) and Ruth Grady (Summerside). They were joined by Wes Jackshaw (Summerside), Rex Button (Summerside), Rob Cook (Traveller's Rest), Ben Kennedy (Kensington), Ernie Schleichkorn (Summerside), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside).

Both Men and Women started together. The riders road together during the first lap with Jackshaw, Button, Cook, and Trenholm building a breakaway toward the first sprint points. Jackshaw then moved quick off the front and built a gap between him and the three other riders. Trenholm attempted to bridge the gap but Jackshaw was able to complete a smooth cornering before the sprint to take Sprint # 1 uncontested with Trenholm taking second. Cook and Button then battled for third in the Men Sprint. Cook took this sprint.

Ellis took the first Women Sprint uncontested with Grady, riding a mountain bike, crossing the line second.

Wes Jackshaw, Summerside, makes it a clean sweep for the season: with four victories in his four road event attempts.

After the first sprint, Trenholm re-joined Jackshaw in the lead. Both riders worked together. Near the last climb before the second last turn, Jackshaw jumped off the saddle and built a gap between him and Trenholm. The gap increased with Jackshaw claiming first for the sprint and Trenholm second. The race for third in the Sprint was exciting as Button caught Cook following the first sprint and then made his move on Cook. Button had built a gap on Cook and Button claimed third in the Sprint.

Ellis claimed her second Women Sprint uncontested as she and Grady continued to battle the hard winds without the benefit of drafting on another's wheel.

For the Men, after the second Sprint, Jackshaw continued to lead and crossed the line in a time of 1:05:19, Trenholm second, followed by Button, Cook, Schleichkorn, and Kennedy. Both Trenholm and Kennedy earned improvement points as Trenholm improved his time by 47 seconds and Kennedy by an incredible 3:14.

MacDonald was coming off the heals of an impressive 6th place finish in the World Masters Games in Edmonton this summer. MacDonald's 6th place finish was at an average speed of 38.45 km/h as he was in the pack with another twenty riders who sprinted to the line.

The atmospheric conditions challeneged the riders as the beginning riders were face with a 19 km/h side and then a head wind before making the turn at Miscouche for the finish line.

Trenholm was the first rider out of the gate, followed by Button, Cook, Kennedy, Jackshaw, and MacDonald at 30 second intervals.

Indian River Road Event

Starters: 6
Winning Race Time: 1:03:57 (33.80 km/h)

Atmospheric Conditions
Wind: 13 km/h N
Temperature: 17 Celsius
kPa: 103.0
Humidity: 72%
Conditions: Warm and sunny.

Details of Event: Today's event featured four riders who participated in the 260 km tip-to-tip event on Saturday (three days ago), Rex Button (Summerside), Rob Cook (Traveller's Rest), Ben Kennedy (Kensington), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside). Jeff Proctor (New Hampshire, USA) and Wes Jackshaw (Summerside) joined the foursome in the 36 km Indian River 3 lap road event.

The six riders quickly jumped into a paceline from the start, with each rider taking his turn at the front. Through a few inclines, the riders remained together until the turn back toward Indian River. Jackshaw and Trenholm found themselves in a breakaway as both riders stragetically placed themselves ready for the first sprint of the day. Trenholm rolled beside Jackshaw as both started the last climb before the sprint. With both riders side by side, Trenholm jumped out of the saddle and made his move. Jackshaw attempted to get on his wheel; Trenholm shook him loose. Trenholm claimed first at the line for the first sprint, Jackshaw second.

The race now for third at the line for the sprint began. After Cook settled back in the saddle after one solid attempt to bridge the gap to the lead riders, he and Proctor were battling for the third place in the sprint. Cook lead from the bottom of the hill powering across the sprint line to take the third in the sprint.

After the race for Sprint #1, Jackshaw muscled to the front of Trenholm and took a time trialist position on the saddle and drops. Jackshaw continued to push the pace as the gap between him and Trenholm grew. The second sprint of the day was uncontested: Jackshaw first; Trenholm second. The race for the second sprint in the chase group however was a head to head battle between Cook, Proctor, and Button who had bridged the gap. All three riders entered the climb together; Cook broke loose mid-way to the crest of the hill and captured his second third place in the sprint for the day.

Jackshaw continued to build the gap and finished first with a time of 1:03:57. Trenholm took second. The battle for third was mixed with vigor and strategy: Proctor attempted to break from the trio on the decent before the final climb. However, Button and Cook were quick to jump on his wheel. Cook waited once again until the trio were half way up the hill and then took off. Cook nailed the third place finish with Button, Protor, and Kennedy rounding out the field.

The overall event results:

1. Wes Jackshaw (Summerside) 1:03:57 (33.80 km/h)
2. Ken Trenholm (Summerside) 1:09:04 (31.27 km/h)
3. Rob Cook (Traveller's Rest) 1:10:49 (30.51 km/h)

Details of Event: The first-time club rider Jeff Proctor (Litchfield, New Hampshire) was welcomed to this event by Rob Cook (Traveller's Rest), Albert Flavell (Summerside), Ernie Schleichkorn (Summerside), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside).

The atmospheric conditions challenged the riders today as the wind was a side wind as well as a head wind.

Departure out of the gate at one minute intervals were: Trenholm, Cook, Flavell, Proctor, and Schleichkorn. Completing the course and taking a second consecutive first place time trial finish was Flavell, earning not only a first place ranking but setting a new course record at 19:20 while averaging 39.41 km/h.

Starters: 6
Winning Race Time: 2:19:50 (35.79 km/h)

Atmospheric Conditions
Wind: 19 km/h NW
Temperature: 16 Celsius
kPa: not available
Humidity: 84%
Conditions: Warm and sunny.

Details of Event: Another new rider was welcomed to the club for this event: Ben Kennedy (Kensington). Kennedy was joined for the event by Rob Cook (Traveller's Rest), Paul Deighan (Stratford), Wes Jackshaw (Summerside), Albert Flavell (Summerside), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside).

The pace was uncharacteristically quick from the start with riders forming a single file paceline to cut through the headwinds. Jackshaw, Deighan, and Flavell eventually found themselves in a breakaway group at the 18 km mark of the course. This trio worked together for the remainder of the event with Trenholm, Cook, and Kennedy battling the elements independently.

The first sprint (at the 40 k mark) was captured by Deighan with Flavell grabbing second. The speed during this sprint reached a high of 57.9 km/h. Deighan also won the second sprint (at 63 km mark) with Flavell landing second again. Deighan's efforts moved him in a tie for first place in the Sprint Points with Jackshaw, both with 20 points.

As Deighan, Jackshaw, and Flavell were within 10 km for the finish at Wellington Centre, Flavell and Jackshaw noted a small gap between them and Deighan. Both Flavell and Jackshaw then took turns at the front and eventually developed a gap between them and Deighan. The stage was then set for a sprint finish. With Jackshaw leading the charge into two quick corners at the Selmon Park turn-off onto West Drive, Flavell was quick to stick on his wheel. Jackshaw attempted to shake Flavell off his wheel on two occassions but to no avail. Then, Flavell using Jackshaw's draft pulled alongside him on the home stretch with less than 300 meters to go until the line. With both riders pushing themselves as hard as they could after on the bike for over 80 km, Jackshaw edged Flavell at the line by half a tire length.

The overall event results:

1. Wes Jackshaw (Summerside) 2:19:50 (35.79 km/h)
2. Albert Flavell (Summerside) 2:19:50 (35.79 km/h)
3. Paul Deighan (Stratford) 2:21:18 (35.41 km/h)

kPa: not available
Humidity: 74%
Conditions: Warm and sunny.

Details of Event: Two new first-time riders to the club participated in today's time trial: Albert Flavell (Summerside) and Paul Deighan (Stratford). The atmospheric conditions played in the hands of the time trialists today: sunny and a light headwind heading toward the 5 km finish. Riders left the start platform at one minute intervals. Ken Trenholm was the first out of the gate, followed by Rex Button (Summerside), Ernie Schleichkorn (Summerside), Deighan, Flavell, and Wes Jackshaw (Summerside).

As usual for time trails, riders were left to face the struggle independently as drafting or working as a team was not an option.

Everyone's pace was quick with all riders posting impressive above 30 km/h average times for the 12.7 km course. Although Flavell captured the glory of the victory, finishing 22 seconds a head of Deighan, all riders have set high benchmarks for themselves when the next time trial takes place in an effort to set new 'personal bests'.

The overall event results:

1. Albert Flavell (Summerside) 19:29 (39.11 km/h)
2. Paul Deighan (Stratford) 19:51 (38.39 km/h)

Humidity: 81%
Conditions: Sunny with a little clouds.

Details of Event: Today's event was marked by the introduction of three new riders to the event: Wes Jackhsaw, Ernie Schleichkorn, and Rex Button. They were joined by Rob Cook and Ken Trenholm.

The group of five riders stayed together for the first third of the race. During the first sprint challenge, Jackshaw was quick to attack and the others countered. In the end, the sprint challenge was a duel between Jackshaw and Trenholm, reaching at one time a top speed of 56.7 km/h. Jackshaw earned 10 points for the sprint win; Trenholm 6 points. The group re-joined together after the sprint.

During the next few kilometres before entering Maximeville, Jackshaw, Schleichkorn, and Trenholm found themselves in a breakaway from the group. The pace quickened as the wind became more challenging. Near the second sprint challenge on a slight incline, Jackshaw jumped from the trio and took the second Sprint Challenge hands down.

Two groups then worked together: Cook, Button, and Schleichkorn in the chase group with Jackshaw and Trenholm in the lead group. At Miscouche, Jackshaw began to distance himself and took first at the finish by 53 seconds.

The overall event results:

* this figure is an estimate based on using the accepted formulas for calculating power when cycling. This figure is an estimate as in order to obtain a true picture every rise and run and change in direction (because of wind angle) would need to be measured, timed per rider, and calculated. Perhaps a project in the years to come. The following are the average "liberal" % grade during the rides:

Maximeville Course is 1% grade

Please Note: the times posted on this web site are not official times as riders keep a record of their own time and then forward their end of event time to the Summerside Cycling Club stats person (who, by the way, is on the road at the time of each event).
